Think stamp collecting as a pretty tame hobby?
Wrong!
Everyone likes to pride themselves as having it better than their neighbor, better car, greener grass, etc.
Stamp collectors now have a new better or best Toy to brag about, Graded 100 stamps.
This is about math, not meth; Having a stamp that is perfect, perfect centering, color, perfs and all aspects of the stamp must be perfect.
So perfect that only a machine can tell exactly, so much for the fun of just collecting.
This month #675 U.S. Nebraska Overprint 6 cent orange that has a catalog value of $75.00 for a never hinged copy sold at public auction for $8,000.00 + 15% auction commission. That's Right, over 122 times catalog!!! The stamp has a perfect 100 grade, only one SO FAR, with this perfect score. Will others that are found with a 100 score also be worth $8,000 + 15%? Will this trend last, for how long?
Take a cigar box full of loose MINT NEVER HINGED pre 1930 U.S. stamps. You will have hundreds of stamps, perhaps a thousand or two. Sort by perfect color, perfect perf tips, not even the slightest little bend, not a trace of a gum skip, and perfect centering within +/- 0.0001inch and with large margins.
How many perfect ones do you have?
Look in my cigar box, I don't have the time!
Good Luck
